The poorest region of Spain has adopted Linux as the official operating system of public schools and offices, in hopes of improving the area's vast technological and economic lag.

The move by the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, a rural zone that borders Portugal, will mark the first time a European public school system has switched to open source, said Luis Millán Vázquez de Miguel, the community's minister of education, science and technology.
The government has burned 80,000 CDs with the Debian Linux operating system and software ranging from text editors to an Internet browser. The disks will be sent to the area's 670 schools and distributed to the public through newspaper inserts.
Largely bypassed by the industrial revolution, Extremadura has pinned its hopes on the technological revolution.
"Making free software available -- that we've designed for use in an educational environment, but are offering to all citizens for personal or professional use -- is a key part of technological literacy," said Vazquez de Miguel.
The project was born out of the need for cheap, easy-to-use systems to equip the region's 32 technology centers, where citizens can take basic computer courses free of charge. The government estimates that free software will save the community about $7 million a year.

Ingredients:
2 cuillères à table de beurre
1 oignon haché
1 gousse d'ail hachée finement
3/4 de tasse lentilles rouges sèches
1 tasse et 1/2 de bouillon de légumes
2 tomates hachées finement
1/3 de tasse de chapelure
1 cuillère à table de jus de citron
1 cuillère à thé de basilic séché
1/2 cuillère à thé de sel
1 oeuf légèrement battu

Preparation:
Dans une casserole, faire fondre le beurre à feu moyen.
Ajouter l'oignon et l'ail et cuire pendant environ 3 minutes.
Ajouter les lentilles et mélanger pour bien les enrober.
Ajouter le bouillon de légumes et porter à ébullition.
Réduire le feu, couvrir et laisser mijoter pendant environ 30 minutes ou jusqu'à ce que les lentilles soient tendres. Laisser refroidir légèrement.
À l'aide d'un presse-purée, réduire la préparation aux lentilles en purée.
Ajouter les tomates, la chapelure, le jus de citron, le basilic, le sel et l'oeuf battu. Bien mélanger.
Étendre la préparation dans un moule à pain graissé et tapissé de papier ciré graissé.
Cuire au four préchauffé à 350 degrés pendant 1 heure ou jusqu'à ce qu'un couteau inséré au centre du pain en ressorte sec.
Laisser reposer pendant 10 minutes.
Passer la lame d'un couteau sur les côtés du pain pour le détacher du moule.
Renverser le pain sur une assiette de service et accompagner d'un peu de sauce tomate. [Upperworld.com] (via Nina)
